WTF ARE FREE RADICALS?
I honestly thought this WTF series would turn into a thing I only did here and there. But, honestly, I’ve gotten the best responses from you guys with these blogs and a few self-love ones so I’m happy to keep it going. The term ‘Free Radicals’ is definitely a “dangerous” buzz word we keep hearing pop up. Most people know they don’t want free radical damage, but what exactly is it and how do we stop it?
WTF are Free Radicals?
“The free radical theory of aging (FRTA) states that organisms age because cells accumulate free radical damage over time. A free radical is any atom or molecule that has a single unpaired electron in an outer shell.“ (The google.com insert)
So, WTF does that even mean?
It means aging. It means that chemical compounds that interact with our skin, without proper protection, are causing damage. It means things like smoke, dirt, dust, air pollution, fried foods, and alcohol are interacting with your skin causing aging. Think of an apple when it’s cut and exposed to air; the free radicals in our environment cause the apple to turn brown due to oxidization. The same is happening to your skin.
WTF do we do to stop free radical damage?
Antioxidants. Stop smoking. Cut down your drinking. Wear Sunscreen. Wash your Face. Don’t use expired skincare products. Don’t use retinol during the day. BIG ONE and a PRO TIP: Don’t use unstable Vitamin C.
