Networking: Do We Love it or hate it?

I went to a networking event a few weeks ago, and during the discussions, a recurring sentiment emerged: "I hate networking." This phrase resonated with many attendees, sparking a lively conversation about the various emotions and experiences associated with networking.
However, something that truly stuck out to me was when the speaker made a compelling point about the common aversion to networking. She suggested that it isn't networking itself that we might dislike, but rather the individuals who "act immediately" in a way that feels opportunistic. This perspective shifted my understanding of the networking experience. We are all present at these events for a multitude of reasons: to promote our businesses, to grow our professional networks, to meet "one person" or to set an intention.
Yet, nothing feels more disconcerting than encountering someone who seems to be solely focused on their own gain, disregarding the mutual benefits.
Reflecting on my own experiences, I realize that my feelings toward networking have evolved over time. I don't think I love or hate networking anymore; instead, I see it as an integral part of my business journey.
Now, I approach networking with a more balanced perspective, recognizing it as a necessary element of professional growth and development. If you attended a networking event recently, I applaud you for taking that step especially if you went alone.
Recently, I had the opportunity to attend Marshall's and Marie Claire's PowerPlay Networking Event in Philadelphia. This particular event was designed to empower attendees and facilitate meaningful conversations among professionals from diverse backgrounds. The photo above captures a moment from that event.
