How To Be Professional On Set As A Makeup Artist

I've been hired a few times where someone said "The last artist we had...." so I'll help you never have someone say that about you. We want you to stay professional as a makeup artist on set and keep booking jobs.

Understanding Your Role

As a makeup artist on set, it is crucial to recognize the significance of your role within the larger production team. You help contribute to the overall vision but you are not the star of the show. I hate to break it to ya. Be open and flexible to adjusting as needed, ask questions, refer to your call sheet and creative brief.

Preparation is Key

Before arriving on set, thorough preparation is key. This includes gathering all necessary makeup supplies and tools but also organizing them in a way that allows for quick access during busy shooting days. My mentor, Crystal Wright, always told me "If you stay ready, you never have to get ready." For that message, I am forever thankful. A pro tip from me: keep a small kit.

Establishing a Positive Attitude

Maintaining a professional demeanor is vital when working on set. This means being punctual, respectful, and adaptable. Arriving early allows you to set up your workspace and prepare for the day ahead. Being respectful towards fellow crew members fosters a collaborative atmosphere. Have fun but remember that we are here for one common goal. Flexibility is also such a big deal, as last-minute changes to the schedule or makeup requirements can occur frequently.

Communication is Essential

Effective communication with the creative director, production team, talent, client and other crew members is fundamental to achieving the desired results. Regularly check in with the talent to ensure they are comfortable with their makeup and to discuss with the creative team for any adjustments they may want. Think with a collab mindset but do not take anything personally.

Maintaining Hygiene and Safety Standards

As a makeup artist, it is imperative to uphold high standards of hygiene and safety. Always sanitize your tools and brushes to prevent any risk of infection or allergic reactions. We can debate what to use on a different blog. Using disposable applicators and keeping your workspace clean and organized will help create a safe environment.

Being a professional makeup artist on set involves more than just applying makeup -- even though that's all people think we do sometimes. It requires a combination of preparation, effective communication, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
