Things To Help Make You Successful As a Makeup Artist That Doesn't Include Makeup

Your success, as a makeup artist, is not solely dependent on your artistic skills and the quality of the makeup products you use. There are several critical aspects of running a successful makeup artistry business that extend beyond the makeup application. Here is a checklist you need to consider, which does not include traditional elements like makeup or things like websites. We'll get into that another time.

Networking and Relationship Building

Establishing and maintaining strong relationships within the beauty industry is vital. VITAL. Let me say it louder for those In the back. This includes connecting with other makeup artists, photographers, models, and hairstylists. This could also mean other production crew members, modeling agencies, wedding venues, the list goes on and on. Building a solid network can lead to referrals and opportunities that may not be accessible otherwise. My mentor always says "Your network is your net worth" so build it strong and give back to it.

Client Consultation Process

Develop a thorough client consultation process. Create a structured way to understand your clients’ needs, preferences, and any specific requirements they may have for their makeup (this can be done before or during your time together). Consider preparing a questionnaire (I send mine through Dubsado*) that covers aspects such as skin type, makeup style preferences, and any allergies. This helps enhance client satisfaction and loyalty. *We will go over the benefits of CRMs for makeup artists another day.

Portfolio Development

Your portfolio is the visual piece of your skills and style as a makeup artist. It should include high-quality images of your work with a range of skin tone, age and gender. Regularly update your portfolio to reflect your latest work and trends in the industry. Focus on the niche you want to advertise. For example: You want bridal? Do bridal shoots. You want beauty work? Do clean, beauty style TFP.

Don't stop doing Trade For Print. It can build your portfolio and build your network.

Social Media Strategy

You know what I'm about to say..but I'll say it again, having a strong social media presence is essential for any makeup artist. This doesn't mean 100k followers. This means post, engage, comment, show yourself off.

Continuing Education and Skill Development

The beauty industry is constantly evolving, with new trends, techniques, and products emerging regularly. I was always taught in cosmetology schoo, "If you ever think you know it all, it's time to leave the industry."

Time Management and Scheduling

Effective time management is a key component of running a successful makeup artistry business or being a freelance makeup artist. Showing up late never looks good. Things happen but people pay attention. Use google calendars, get a CRM program, set alarms, I don't really care. Find what works for you and utilize it.

Financial Management

Understand where your money goes, how you spend it and how to make more of it. This includes budgeting for supplies, tracking expenses, and managing income. Consider setting up a system to monitor your financial health, such as using accounting software or hiring a financial advisor. I use Quickbooks, have an accountant, HYSA, Roth IRA, etc etc etc. We'll talk that another time.

Legal Considerations

If you are practicing makeup on people without insurance and a license (if you need it for your state) you are insane. No, I won't take it back. It's important to be aware of any legal requirements relevant to your business. This not only protects you but protects your kit, your client and their property.

Yes, we will get more into the needs for website, branding, CRM and more at another blog. But, please, go get business insurance, organize your google calendar and network with intentions.
